Hiring for Drapery Workrooms

After 20 years in the drapery workroom business, I have found my best employees through unusual routes. Our industry isn’t well suited to common job search tools like Indeed or want ads. Here are some avenues I explored that led to amazing people who brought tremendous value to my business.

No Experience Required

Finding people with workroom experience can be challenging. Finding people who enjoy being crafty and making beautiful things is easy.

There are people out there regardless of their background, who are interested in being productive and learning something new.

The best candidate is genuinely interested, can follow structure, and wants to contribute.

No English, No Problem

A language barrier can be an intimidating factor when hiring for a drapery workroom. I encourage you to be open to how much can be communicated through non-verbal communication: pointing, drawing, and demonstrating what you would like done. A person who is genuinely interested and has a willing heart can overcome the language barrier and be a wonderful part of your team. Being open to non-English speakers will widen your pool of candidates significantly.
